Q
What is Online Gallery Shukado?

A

Online Gallery Shukado is a shopping website which was created in 2005.
We introduce and sell a wide-range of first-class Japanese fine arts and antiques from the Edo era to modern times.
This website is run by Shukado KK, which was founded in 2003 by Jichiro Tanaka who has over 40 years experience in the art business and his son Chiaki who used to be a system engineer and opened its store/gallery in 2006 in the Ginza district of Tokyo.
Our company name Shukado means the shop of glorious autumn beauty. We came up with this name from the image that our gallery sells gorgeous art pieces which remind viewers of the beautiful autumn field.

Q
Where can the works be seen directly?

A

A All works displayed in our web-site can be seen at our art gallery "Syukado in Ginza, Tokyo" (See the map), where it takes only 5 minutes from the "Sukiyabashi" intersection. However, we are appreciated if you contact us before you visit our gallery because some of works are kept in our storage.
We would like to welcome you with fine preparation for your best visit.
Also, we have visiting service for your convenience. Please contact us for further information.

Q
Are displayed paintings prints (Hanga) or artists own handwriting (Jikishitsu/ autograph)?

A

Partly yes. But as far as there is no note, the paintings are artists' own handwritings. As for printed works, information regarding of the prints, such as lithograph is added to the description of each painting.

Q
Is it possible to place an order for works which don't appear on your website?

A

YES, we are pleased to help you to look for works in compliance with your wishes.
Especially regarding antiquarian books, modern paintings (Western painting and Japanese-style painting), we are sure to give you a good support with the best use of network of market trends and our industry.
Some art works might need a little longer time to obtain, but please feel free to make request via the email.

Q
Are publishing works truly their autographs?

A

We guarantee their authenticity of the autograph works that were published after the Meiji period and had prescribed their connoisseurs.
Regarding works created by artists who published before the Edo period and did not have prescribed connoisseurs, they are sold with our own judgments.
However, all those works are carefully checked by Tanaka Jichiro who has long experience in this field and great reliance. We proudly display such works chosen by him. Please feel free to contact us with any questions you may have.

Q
Do you offer service of purchase?

A
YES. We do purchase antiquarian books and paintings, modern Japanese style and Western style paintings, tools of tea ceremony, and so on. Valuation for those is all free, so feel free to contact us.

Q
How can I display scrolls when there is no room for hanging scroll at my place?

A

Scrolls are originally created so as to be ornamentally hung at alcoves, however, recently many seems to have a trouble to find a place for scrolls because more people became living in apartment houses or condominiums.

We recommend enjoying scrolls hung by not only traditional way, but also other ways such as hanging it on the wall with a nail and laying a small piece of Tatami mat under it.
You may also use a piece of board instead of Tatami.
If you are hesitated to suspend scrolls directly on the wall, you might use additional cloth and then adorn it on the cloth.
However, preparing an alcoves-like room or putting the bottom part of Hyogu with pins in order to keep scrolls from blown up by the wind are better ways.

Q
How can I store scrolls and paintings?

A
Scrolls

These are gradually worn away either way of storages which is you just store it for many years at your cabinet or you keep them hung all the time. Therefore, from time to time taking it out, adorning and moderately putting it back is recommended. Concerning the length of adorning time, one season at the longest might be suitable. Seasonal change has the advantage in both storage and seasonal sense.

Please avoid places where the direct rays of the sun come in. Scrolls are very sensitive to humidity, so it is better not to adorn it in the rainy season. (Also, please avoid humid days when you putting it back.) In the summer time, bugs' droppings may cause ruin, therefore please keep your scrolls away from rooms where bugs easily come in.
Regarding the storage place, you do not have to worry about too much, but it is also better to keep it in constant temperature and dry place. Since the place which is close to floors is high in humidity, the upper part of closets is recommended.
However, take care not to leave it for too long. We recommend taking out once a year to air. (Please avoid direct rays of the sun when you do this step.)

It is really important to put in the adequate box so as not to lower the value and so as to keep good storage. Please carefully store it in order to avoid separation of inside from a box. Some boxes come with thin paper for additional packing, but from our opinion, it seems better to store without it for avoidance of humidity.

Sometimes chemical repellent such as naphthalene is used, but please stop using it because it cause stains. For repellent, "Bochuzai" (odor to keep insects away) is said to be appropriate and it can be purchased at specialty stores of aroma.

Framed Japanese style paintings

Framed works can stand with dusts, but humidity may cause mold. Like scrolls, we recommend adorning and storing them in dry place.
Lightly, please avoid places where the direct rays of the sun come in.
